On April 22, the Centre for Language and Literacy Education (CLLE), Faculty of Education, University of Macau, hosted a distinguished academic lecture delivered by Prof. Chuang Wang, former Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of Macau and currently Professor of Educational Research, Measurement and Evaluation and Chair of the Department of Educational Leadership at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte). The seminar was chaired by Prof. Shulin Yu, Assistant Dean (Student Affairs) and Director of CLLE.
Titled “Measurement of Self-Efficacy Beliefs in Language Acquisition: Development and Validation,” the lecture attracted active participation from faculty members and postgraduate students. In his presentation, Prof. Wang first provided a comprehensive overview of the process of instrument development and item writing. Drawing on Messick’s (1995) framework of construct validity and Kane’s (2013) argument-based approach to validation, he elaborated on five major sources of validity evidence: content, response process, internal structure, relations to other variables, and consequences of testing. He then explained the development and validation of the Questionnaire of English Self-Efficacy (QESE). Following the lecture, a Q&A and discussion session was held, during which attendees actively posed questions and engaged in in-depth dialogue with Prof. Wang.
The lecture not only deepened participants’ understanding of self-efficacy measurement and scale development in language acquisition but also strengthened academic exchange and collaboration between the Faculty of Education and leading international scholars.
