CLLE Showcases Innovative Language Education at UM Anniversary Open Day

The University of Macau (UM) successfully held its Anniversary Open Day on 11 January 2026. As part of UM and the Faculty of Education, the Centre for Language and Literacy Education (CLLE) participated in the event by organising an interactive activity entitled “Language Explorer Passport”, highlighting its commitment to innovative, learner-centred language education and community engagement.

The “Language Explorer Passport” activity attracted a diverse group of participants, including students, parents, local residents, and visitors. Upon arrival, participants received a “passport” and completed three interactive stations to collect stamps, which could be exchanged for a commemorative gift. The activity created a welcoming and engaging learning environment throughout the day.

Interactive Stations Promoting Language Learning through Experience

The activity featured three stations designed to introduce language learning in an accessible and enjoyable manner:

  • Tongue Twister Tower
Participants selected an English tongue twister at random, practised for 30 seconds, and then recited it three times at speed, promoting oral fluency in a light-hearted setting.
  • Idiom Pictionary
Participants identified common English idioms based on visual prompts, enhancing their understanding of idiomatic language and cultural meaning through interaction.
  • Emoji Story Challenge
Participants used four to five emojis to create short English stories, encouraging creativity and meaningful language use.

Enhancing Public Engagement with Language Education

Through hands-on participation, visitors were introduced to diverse approaches to language learning and gained insight into the relevance and enjoyment of language education. Feedback from students and parents indicated that the activity helped challenge perceptions of language learning as repetitive or dull, while fostering interest, confidence, and engagement.

By integrating academic perspectives on language and literacy education into interactive activities, the “Language Explorer Passport” reflected CLLE’s role, as part of UM and the Faculty of Education, in promoting public understanding of language learning and strengthening connections between the University and the wider community.
